The Learning Lab
For selected organizations, the Beyond Neutrality Learning Lab provides consultants experienced in nonprofit unionization to advise, train, and coach management in the Beyond Neutrality approach.
Participating organizations contract with Imagine Us LLC, the organizational home for Beyond Neutrality and The Learning Lab, for the support they need. Each engagement is unique.
Since launching in 2023, The Learning Lab has contracted with organizations to provide much-needed support. At the same time, each engagement provides a unique and important opportunity to learn and share the needs and emerging practices of this field.
a common foundation
Beyond Neutrality specializes in supporting nonprofit organizations with a social justice mission. Their budget, structure, geographic location, and situation vary, so each engagement looks different. We ask all organizations if they agree to the foundation of the Learning Lab’s work:
To respond to unionization with a pro-union, anti-racist, and mission-driven approach.
To secure a values-aligned lawyer for aligned legal advice.
To be willing to share materials and insights from their experience as part of the Learning Lab’s mission to develop a field-wide Beyond Neutrality framework and supporting resources.
If we can’t find a road, we’ll make one
Unfortunately, the most well-traveled road for U.S. companies during union campaigns is paved with obstructions, divide-and-conquer, and scorched earth. The high-priced lawyers and union-busting consultants specializing in management-side labor relations are schooled in this approach. Even when they say they are “neutral,” their advice is anything but.
The good news is there is an emerging field of lawyers, HR professionals, and organizational consultants who support the right of employees to form and join unions. The expertise is rapidly evolving as the work environment and demands change.
That is why the Ford Foundation commissioned the Beyond Neutrality 2023 study and report. Based on those recommendations, Beyond Neutrality set up The Learning Lab to partner with organizations in real time to co-create a new, high-road, labor-management paradigm. One that is pro-union, anti-racist, and mission-driven.
Each organization participating in The Learning Lab is unique, and its needs differ. That is why Beyond Neutrality-trained consultants work with leaders to design their own series of supports and interventions.
How we help
We work with leaders to identify the kinds of interventions, trainings, and supports they need. Here are examples of what we have done recently:
Team and individual coaching for senior staff.
Online training for managers and supervisors.
Support for establishing workgroups and committees.
Support to navigate race, power, and polarization issues emerging during unionization.
Support for joint [union & management] training, debriefing, and communications.
Orientation to templates and guides available in the Resource Hub.
Participation in peer learning communities
